Drainage Pipe Repair

When a drainage pipe fails in a utility-dense environment, full excavation from basin to basin isn’t always the right call. At Phelps Hospital in Sleepy Hollow, underground electrical and gas lines made that approach too disruptive and too costly.

Pavemaster used slip lining to rehabilitate the pipe — inserting a new liner through existing access points rather than digging out the entire run. Minimal excavation, no utility conflicts, full drainage capacity restored.

It’s the right solution when what’s underground is as important as what’s on the surface.

    Complete Stormwater Management

We specialize in complete stormwater management for Long Island parking areas.

Implementing effective drainage solutions to prevent water accumulation and ensure proper runoff in parking lots.

Regular cleaning and maintenance of storm drains to prevent blockages and ensure efficient water flow.

Installing and repairing catch basins that capture debris and sediment, preventing them from entering the drainage system.

Techniques to stabilize parking lot slopes and prevent erosion caused by stormwater.

Designing and constructing ponds that either retain water permanently or detain it temporarily after a storm.

Installing trench drains in areas where surface runoff needs to be rapidly captured and directed away from the pavement.

Updating and improving existing stormwater systems to meet current environmental standards and regulations.

Ensuring all stormwater management practices comply with local, state, and federal regulations.

Long Island’s Changing Rainfall — and What It Means for Drainage

    More Rain, Less Snow

Winters are warmer, and heavy rainfall events are becoming more common, particularly in fall and spring.

Historically, Metro NYC and Long Island’s weather has included a healthy mix of snow and rain, with snowmelt contributing to groundwater replenishment and a relatively even distribution of moisture. However, data from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and climate researchers shows a measurable trend: rainfall is increasing in both frequency and volume, while snowfall is decreasing.

Higher Design Standards, More Frequent Storms

Historically, drainage systems were designed primarily to handle peak flows from major storms.

Modern regulations now require systems to manage a broader range of storm events, including frequent, smaller storms, to address both flooding and water quality concerns. This includes provisions for water quality treatment, runoff reduction, channel protection, and flood control, as outlined in the New York State Stormwater Management Design Manual.

Why Long Island parking lots flood

Long Island’s geography works against drainage. Clay-heavy soils slow absorption, the South Shore water table sits close to the surface, and most commercial parking lots were graded decades ago — before current stormwater volumes.

Add aging catch basins and undersized pipe runs, and a heavy rain event doesn’t need to be exceptional to overwhelm a lot. The result is standing water that accelerates asphalt breakdown, creates slip-and-fall liability, and signals a drainage system that’s already behind.

    Common drainage problems

    Catch basinsRegrading

Pooling water in a parking lot is usually a capacity problem — the existing drainage system can’t handle the volume. The fix may be adding catch basins, regrading the surface, or both. Left unaddressed, standing water accelerates asphalt breakdown and creates liability.

    Pipe rehabSlip lining

A sinkhole near a drain is a red flag — it typically means the pipe below has failed and soil is migrating into it. This needs immediate attention. Depending on what’s underground around it, we may rehabilitate the pipe with slip lining rather than full excavation. Learn how we diagnose and repair sinkholes in parking lots →.

    Frame resetAsphalt collar

When a storm drain cover drops below the asphalt surface, water pools around it and the surrounding pavement takes a beating. It’s also a trip hazard and a snowplow magnet. We reset the frame and restore the asphalt collar — one of the most common repairs we do.

    Trench drainsGrade correction

A trench drain sitting even slightly high is a target every winter. Repeated hits bend grates, crack frames, and open the drain to water infiltration and freeze-thaw damage. We replace the damaged components and reset the drain to the correct grade.

    Slip liningMinimal excavation

When a drainage pipe fails near underground electric, gas, or telecom lines, digging out the full run isn’t always practical. Slip lining rehabilitates the pipe through existing access points — minimizing excavation and keeping surrounding infrastructure undisturbed.

    InspectionCleaningMaintenance

Catch basins fill with sediment. Grates corrode. Pipes crack. Most commercial drainage systems need inspection and cleaning well before they show obvious signs of failure. We assess what you have and recommend maintenance or repair before it becomes an emergency.

When was the last time you checked in on your storm drain covers and their integrity?
The first area that a parking lot will most likely weaken -  around the storm drain covers.
Parking lots can last 20 -25 years but there will be repairs to these covers.
As the part of the drainage system that meets the asphalt – this is our specialty.
Trench drains are built to withstand a lot of abuse. Cars and trucks drive over these all day.

Here we replaced an older trench drain that sat too high for years and was being damaged by snowplows hitting it.  The snowplow damage opened the drain to even more damage by the elements.  A snowball effect if you will.
    Problem: Standing water issues.
Solution:  Adding catch basins to an existing parking area to increase capacity.

In 2021 Long Island was spared the direct hit from Henri. Large amounts of water at one time is not what we need here on Long Island. Especially the South shore – where the water table is already pretty close to the surface.

Sometimes a parking area’s storm water runoff needs change for various reasons.
But the effect is the same – too much storm water for the current drainage capacity.

    What we are reading

Why properly characterizing large storms is critical for stormwater professionals.
    – Stormwater Solutions

Stormwater compliance on Long Island isn’t optional — it’s permitted and regulated at both the state and federal level.

Two resources worth bookmarking: the NYS DEC Stormwater page covers New York’s discharge permits and what’s required for commercial properties, and the EPA’s NPDES Stormwater Planning page covers the federal framework behind it all.

If you’re managing a commercial property and haven’t thought about your stormwater obligations lately, these are good places to start.
